Male of Egyptian descent. Azanael has the chalk-white complexion, gaunt cheeks, and jet-black eyes common to very old Baali. Whether shaved or naturally bald, he wears his head bare and held high, a slight sneer hovering over his mouth. His clothing is the deepest, darkest black, simple garments without adornment but of exquisite fabric and cut.
In life, Azanael was a Coptic scholar of rising renown in the newly-founded Cairo, capital of the Fatimid Caliphate in Egypt. The details of his embrace are unknown, but his eagerness to study forbidden texts certainly played a role, and he took immediately to the study of Infernal lore. After the apparent destruction of Nergal during the Second Baali War and the loss of Moloch during the fall of Carthage, Azaneal uncovered the forgotten gate to Chorazin under what appeared to be living shadows. Forming an alliance with an infernalist faction of Lasombra called the Angellis Ater, he brought them into Clan Baali as apostates and harnessed their power to gain access to the lost city of Chorazin. Within, he found the crypt where Nergal had kept the mortal form of a demon. The signs he found scratched in the walls there shattered the souls of all who beheld it, and Azaneal was the only one to survive the orgiastic frenzy that resulted, gaining deep and fell knowledge of the Discipline of Obtenebration in the process. He has assumed the mantle of Ruler of Chorazin, and nominally headed the Clan from the depths of the hidden city of Chorazin. Many Elders have rejected him, but the younger Infernalists listened to his call. In 2009 CE a ritual was enacted to combat the Baali and infernal. No one knows what effect (if any) it had on Azanael or the city of Chorazin.
