Chronicle Teaser

I am not unmindful of the fact that violence often brings about momentary results. Nations have frequently won their independence in battle. But in spite of temporary victories, violence never brings permanent peace. - "Letter from Birmingham Jail", Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The Sabbat Crusade for Acadiana, and the Diocese which gave it leadership, is routed from its halls of power. In the upheavals of the Red Years surrounding the appearance of the Red Star, the Sword of Caine in southern Louisiana met with a series of catastrophic defeats. Despite vicious and prolonged battle, the Family Giovanni and their Setite allies finally succeeded in breaking the Sabbat war machine and its will to fight. Now, the remnant packs of the Diocese of Acadiana huddle around their Archbishop, who has organized a guerilla resistance in the wake of their defeat. Their fight continues, but no longer on the grand scale on which it once took place. The Ducti fight for the very survival of their way of unlife, holding out for inches of ground in the hopes that, one night, a renewed Crusade for Acadiana might return and shed light on the mountain of glory they seek to build.

City Description

The Archdiocese of Saint Francis is lead by Graciela Silva, an ultraconservative Lasombra. She provides direction through multiple nomadic packs in the area. The pressure of the hunters and harrying of the Independent Alliance keeps the Sabbat from establishing a foothold in the area.

City Timeline - Saga of the Broken Sword

  • 1600s-The Sabbat pour into the vastness of the new world. Acadiana is littered with Serpents of the Light and Samedi. This draws the attention of the Camarilla and begins a centuries long battle for dominance.
  • 1720s-The French establish Baton Rouge. Kindred arrive, various clans with no real sect affiliation, just wanting a peaceful place to settle for a while.
  • 1768-The First Sabbat Civil War reaches Acadiana quickly and brutally. The Lasombra eventually concede control of the area to the Tzimisce as they were also fighting the Giovanni and the Camarilla.
  • 1779-Battle of Baton Rouge (Pt.1); The Spanish defeat the English, and the Camarilla officially arrive in Baton Rouge, and promptly take over.
  • 1803-1820-The Second Sabbat Civil War decimates the ranks of the Sword of Caine. Most of the packs in the area destroy each other directly and indirectly by drawing scrutiny from hunters as well as the Tower. It is rumored the Anarchs played a large part in these events, but the Sword hasn’t been successful in their attempts to verify the stories.
  • 1820-The Giovanni presence grows in the city, much to the Sword’s dismay. Aaron Crane, a Serpent of the Light, is unanimously elected Archbishop of Acadiana by the Council of Bishops.
  • 1835-The Louisiana State Penitentiary opens, largely under Giovanni influence. War packs recruit new members from former inmates to bolster their ranks with individuals already desensitized to human suffering.
  • 1861-1865-The US Civil War breaks out; Louisiana attempts to secede from the Union
  • 1870-Ventrue Prince established, Kindred across all clans/sects start to involve themselves with the political nature of the city. Also in 1870, LSU established (Brujah influenced)
  • 1919-The purge of the Inquisition at the hands of the Black Hand does indeed cause turmoil in Acadiana. While dealing with internal issues and spread far too thin, the Sabbat suffer the loss of Archbishop Crane to an assassin later found to be hired by the Followers of Set.
  • 1922-After years of debating and politicking, the Bishop of the Ritae, Adelina Cruz finally ascends to the position of Archbishop. The Lasombra begin their path back to leadership in Acadiana.
  • 1937-The Brujah win their war with the Ventrue, though little blood is shed on either side. A new Prince takes over, Ethan Krieger (Brujah), and reigns until the turn of the century.
  • 1939-Archbishop Cruz is killed in Monomacy by a Coyote name Jill. Jill disappears after and never takes the position. Another Lasombra known as Carter the Grey picks up the mantle and attempts to bring peace to his conflict weary brothers and sisters.
  • 1955-The Archbishop and the Bishop of Enlightenment split the Sword along philosophical lines. Archbishop Carter wanted the Sword to value Humanity as a tool, while Bishop Amadi preached fiery sermons denouncing Humanity as the ultimate oppression of the kindred mind and spirit.
  • 1960-November 1st, at 8pm, in an extremely well planned and executed attack on the Sword’s leadership, Clans Tremere and Malkavian lead the Camarilla forces that all but decapitates the Sabbat’s leadership in the span of six hours. Bishop Clay of War is the last member of the higher clergy not ashed by the time the sun rises. Ducti and Priests were targeted first, a tactic that cut the effectiveness of the war packs off at the knees and demoralized the remaining forces which allowed the Camarilla to ash the longest sitting Archbishop of Acadiana and the majority of the Council.
  • 1961-Benjamin Clay, the Rat Lord, Bishop of War, is bathed as the new Archbishop of Acadiana. His first edict is to dissolve the Council of Bishops and replace it with the Ducti Circle. This new council gives the Archbishop wide support from nearly every faction. His emphasis on ceasing attacks and taking time to train up new recruits into proper warriors of Caine even brings the rapidly growing Loyalists to his side.
  • 2000-The Red Court: The Camarilla court is interrupted one evening by the Prince’s childer (an Anarch leader) and his crew. A relatively insignificant action from childe to sire throws the Prince into wassail, an overreaction for the books. Court members died, Anarchs died, and the Camarilla control of the city of Baton Rouge was no more. There are suspicions that the Giovanni had something to do with this, but they were not present, so no one can prove it. The Prince’s childer lived, and now holds an almost irrational grudge against the Giovanni.
  • 2005-The Giovanni still control the city, and have become more open to the idea of business with the Setites. Things are shaky but promising. Hurricane Katrina hits New Orleans and Baton Rouge, causing a max influx of mortals and kindred alike to flee to BR
  • 2005 July 2-Archbishop Clay receives a strange visitor in a very odd mask. After it leaves, Archbishop Clay convenes the Circle of Ducti to discuss a foolproof plan to deal a massive blow to the Giovanni.
  • April 4th, 2006-Sabbat Crusade-Members of multiple packs descend on Baton Rouge taking advantage of the increased population in the city after the hurricane. This coordinated attack was planned through infiltration points in the Giovanni and the remaining Camarilla members in the city. Rampant fighting in the streets and looting occurred. Bringing hunters attention to the area and the packs only stayed for a week. Only two Packs continued to harry the people of the city. The Giovanni was hosting their annual celebration for the diableration of Cappadocius. At the beginning of the celebration, second cousin vampire known for being a failure became an eight foot tall tzimisce monster then the shadows came and the harbingers seeking revenge. Many Giovanni died in this attack.
  • 2007-2010-There was nowhere to run in Acadiana after the Sword’s crusade against the Giovanni. The Necromancers used every asset available to them to seek bloody vengeance on the Sabbat. The effectiveness of Giovanni purge practices was unlike anything the local Sabbat had ever seen. The Sword of Caine was transformed into a rusty butter knife as 90% of the sect was wiped out in Acadiana over the course of three nights(and days). The curse of the Archbishop did not end here as Benjamin Clay was captured and burned at the stake by the agents of the Giovanni and their Setite allies.
  • 2010-Present Day: The Sabbat goes deep underground, meeting secretly in the rural areas surrounding Baton Rouge proper. In June 2015, the newly bathed Archbishop Maynard Lee Aguilard, a young Crusader, requests that all remaining Sabbat join him and form a single pack. Not having very many better options, the diocese sees itself reunited for the most part. Some Loyalists refuse to follow the edict resulting in several very small and almost renegade Sabbat cells. As the Sabbat regrows in the shadows, Price reinstates the Council of Bishops, but he does not dissolve the Ducti Circle. Only time will tell how well this system works.

Proxy Rules

All proxies for live games must be submitted 7 days prior to the live monthly game. The player may secure a live person, not planning on portraying their own PC for that event, and register that player with the VST prior to game at vst.sabbat.batonrouge@gmail.com, otherwise the character will be ran by the VST. Players wishing to proxy into the domain to portray their characters outside of game (i.e. Scenes over email), may continue to portray their character without a representative. Notification of a player’s local VST will be included in all proxies.

Any incoming proxies to the Baton Rouge VSS, or outgoing proxies from the Baton Rouge VSS by may be subject to monitoring at the discretion of the VST within the borders of the VSS.

Proxies should include as much of the following as possible, if anything is missing it will be left in the storyteller's hands. While sometimes characters die in proxies, the ST staff will take all necessary steps to attempt to secure a fair escape.

Players wishing to Proxy into the VSS must first gain approval from their local VST and the Baton Rouge VST.

1. A complete character sheet and full creation/XP log.

2. Their method of entry into the city (plane, car, Power, etc.).

3. Character’s intended physical appearance and style of dress.

4. Enumerated detail of the character's goals and how they intend to accomplish them.

5. The player/character/MES# of any other PCs the character intends to interact with.

6. Brief write-up of the character’s attitude, personality, and motivation for attending the game.

7. Brief write-up of the character’s reactions to possible situations (combat, conversation with strangers, etc.). This should be reflective of your intended goals.

  • No mechanics will be employed that the player does not specify in this section unless using them would prevent said PC’s death. We all have those moments where we forget our mechanics. This should not be punishable by losing a character.

8. Player’s Presiding/VSS Storyteller's contact information - their presiding storyteller must be included on the email thread.
