An Italian man with a dark complexion, Marcellus dresses the part of a wealthy merchant who is decades out of touch with current fashion. His dark hair is kept slicked back and he is constantly rubbing his pronounced jawline in pensive thought.
Born as the son of a Roman merchant family, Marcellus grew bored with the urban lifestyle and decided to join the Roman military. Inexperienced in the rowdy lifestyle of a soldier, he soon found himself with considerable gambling debt, addicted to wine and with many rivals for the favor of a particular courtesan. Marcellus arrogantly assumed his family name would be protection enough, but his enemies recouped their losses by kidnapping him and selling him into slavery to the mines of Las Medulas. Although most slaves succumbed to the heavy tasks and the cruel taskmasters, Rufus thrived, holding himself against the mythical tales of conduct of his family, refusing to die like a slave. This mindset proved to be his salvation, as the powerful Lasombra Boukephos visited the mines and was impressed by his noble bearing and his concentrated mind. He often returned to those mines in the centuries that followed. In death as in life, in time the world fell short of Marcellus’s ideals and by the coming of the Spanish Civil War (1936), he grew so disgusted with the modern world and its petty conflicts that he willfully entered Torpor, awaiting the coming of a more honorable time.
Rufus has risen in modern nights and is even more disgusted at the state of things than when he went to torpor. He sees the world as having lost the foundations of honor and he is revolted by it.
