Dignitas (Ventrue Only)
Praiseworthy [Commendable by Censure]
Prince of Los Angeles
September 3rd, 1390 CE - Rikard [Rie-kard] Bouwman is born as Rijkert de Borgloon (Luunz) on September 3rd, 1390, second son of a lesser vassal-gentry to the Burgandians of Limburg. His childhood is comfortable, but otherwise unremarkable. He is tutored and gains a fair level of education for the time and is groomed as the replacement to his sickly elder brother, Guillaime.
1406 CE - As his elder brother’s health improves, his prospects of inheriting the house are greatly reduced. Once Guillame is married to Vibe van Riemst, Rijkert is impressed into service as an archer in the Burgandian-Limburgian army, renamed Rikard Bouwman. Originally, he served on the side of the Hooks before defecting to the more ‘progressive’ Cods during the Hook and Cod Wars.
1408 CE - Rikard is recognized for his superlative leadership skills and strategy after his company marshal is slain during the Slag op de Amstelbrugge. He is ghouled by Desmond Aldred (Johnathan Fii, US2013090109) and begins a long grooming process. Remembering how he felt his birthright was stolen from him by poor fortune, he endeavors to be the best servant and prospective childer that Lord Aldred has seen in an age.
March 11th, 1442 AD - Rikard Bouwman is embraced by Desmond Aldred. His agoge involves bringing the ruination of the House of Borgloon-Riemst to prove he has cut ties from his mortal life. His animosity for his brother Guillame fuels him and he fulfills this within a decade, consigning his brother, sister in law, and nieces and nephews to ruination and poverty. It is said he stood there, watching as his eldest niece was taken to become the ‘scullery maid’ of a particularly callous lord of the Spanish Kingdom. His agoge ends officially on May 17th, 1451 A.D.
1480 CE - In response to his Sire’s capture and maiming and participation in the rescue thereof, Rikard becomes an ardent opponent of the Anarchs and in particular the Tzimisce clan. Though he obeys the established laws and expectations of Hierarchy, it becomes known that he harbors a deep hatred for both Sabbat Anarchs and the Tzimisce.
1493 CE - Rikard, upon hearing of the discovery of the New World, turns his eyes West for possible investment opportunities and conquest. However, little comes of these for nearly a century.
1532 CE - Rikard sires his first Childe, Pavel Zjiertic, however, the youth does not survive his agoge and their name and legacy is quickly forgotten.
1580s to Early 1600s - The formation of the United Provinces and the representative, albeit Mercantile-Oligarchic, Republic they represent intrigues Rikard and he begins to see new opportunities for Ventrue leadership beyond just infiltrating the aristocracy and military leadership of Europe. He remains distant, but subtly influences lesser houses and mercantile corporations that begin to gain footholds in the new world during this era. He accumulates a great deal of wealth and influence during this period. It also informs his more ‘progressive’ viewpoints that sometimes come to odds with the greater Clan Ventrue, but prove to be useful in latter nights.
1618-1648 CE - Under different names, Rikard involves himself in the conflicts of the Thirty Year’s War, trying to help shatter the grip of Catholicism on much of Central and Western Europe due to its apparent infiltration by the Sabbat and to weaken their grip on many realms of Europe.
His initial participation is in aid to the Princes of Bohemia, who found themselves shattered and in disarray following the Battle of White Mountain, though his influence is primarily felt through financial and resource provision. When the Lasombra attempt to seize the greater Netherlands for the Sabbat through the Spanish controlled provinces, Rikard becomes fully involved in helping the United Provinces repel the forces of the Spanish Netherlands. He also lends aid to the states of Norway-Denmark and Sweden to help counter the pro-Catholic belligerents and Habsburgs, whom he believes are infiltrated by both the Tzimisce and the Lasombra, as well as other members of the Sabbat.
During this time, he takes on the moniker, “The Mercenary King” who would appear to help turn the tide of desperate battles or provide financial backing to the pro-Protestant belligerents of the various phases of the conflict. Rumor states he had a hand in helping the Dutch Republic launch its golden age and take its place as a Great Power in Europe. Conflicting reports have him meddling in the affairs of both Sweden and the Dutch Netherlands. His investments begin to turn fully from military to mercantile during this era, and while he is still known as a great warrior, he becomes a shrewd and calculating businessman.
Later 17th/Early 18th Century - Involving himself in the lucrative slave trade, he continues to amass wealth. Though having less of a stomach for chattel slavery, he tries to encourage slavery more akin to indentured servitude in the Dutch sphere of influence. However, he suffers a serious financial setback after numerous slave rebellions in the Caribbean and Dutch New World.
During this time, Rikard comes in contact with Morvenna Mathias (Heather Mac Donald, US2014010079), a Cam-loyal Lasombra Antitribu. Originally, they begin engaging in trade warfare as Rikard tries to hold onto his stake in the Dutch East India Company and the slave trade. However, over numerous harsh missives, chance meetings, and the revelations of the horrors of chattel slavery, he divests himself from slavery as a means of capital, favoring durable and trade goods over human chattel.
His attempts to do work in the New World; however, are stymied frequently by the Sabbat influence in the region.
Mar 11th, 1742 - With ceremony and circumstance, Rikard Bouwman, is recognized as a full Elder of the Tower and Clan Ventrue.
1770s CE - Tensions between England and their colonies in the Americas spur Rikard to invest money and influence into the nascent rebellions in the New World despite the Sabbat’s hold on the Eastern Seaboard. While he is not directly involved, he makes small, but sizeable investments in many of the trading companies and organizations on both sides of the conflict. During this period, he sires another Childe. (Hook for NPC/PC descendants)
Early 1800s CE - The Industrial Revolution attracts the interests of the now full-fledged Elder. He moves around to be close to his Sire, Desmond Aldred, but keeps tabs on his investments in the New World as well as within Europe. He takes on a ghoul by the name of Jane Brighton, which rumors state he is romantically entwined with. Relocates to London, England and becomes a presence in the court there.
1861-1893 CE - Serves as a whip for nearly 20 years before becoming the Primogen, a post he served until he departed to seek an artifact and did not return.
1863 CE - After 30 years of service, he is granted permission to embrace her and begins her agoge.
1893 CE - While searching for an artifact nearby the Temple of Artemis in Epheseus following a lead from Valeria Brunsvick, (Apryl Songer, US2008011654) Rikard is either attacked or trips a security measure, and falls into torpor after being drained of blood and trapped within one of the vaults of the tomb he was exploring. Rumors circulate he wore an enchanted suit of armor, gifted to him by the Ventrue Prince of Berlin. (DPOTM). His childe, Lucille Brighton is destroyed during the incident.
1933 CE - Rikard is awoken by an archaeological excursion of Xavier Langston. He immediately sets upon them and devours nearly all of them before coming out of his hungered frenzy. Realizing what he has done, he makes an emergency embrace of the young archaeologist. Little does he know that Soheil, a member of Clan Assamite was planning on embracing Xavier for himself and as a result, Rikard pays considerable restitution in the way of a major boon for poaching his prospect. Soheil and Rikard begin a quasi-adversarial relationship that gradually thaws through the years, but there is a measure of chagrin between them.
He finds himself also diminished somehow and weakened, spending years to regain his strength.
1934 CE - Rikard reveals his return to Desmond and presents Xavier as his childe, beginning the young Ventrue’s lengthy accounting and agoge. His reawakening to the world on the eve of WW2 jars the ancient Ventrue, realizing how much the world has changed in the 40 years since his slumber began. He assumes the public name of Richard Bowman, as he settles permanently in the United States with Xavier to oversee his agoge.
1950s to Present - Rikard becomes concerned with the seeming waning influence of the Camarilla, in particular in Europe and the United States. He struggles to keep up with accelerating pace of humanity, but works hard to at least keep up on a nominal level. However, his age and mannerisms make it difficult to relate to the constant shifts of mortal whim and caprice. He becomes almost totally withdrawn from any active involvement in the world in large, preferring to use his retainers, allies, and catspaws to take care of his business -- focusing internally on the affairs of the Tower and his business interests. He spends many nights atop his thrones of power in Camarilla controlled cities of America and centers of commerce.
1992 CE - The Anarch Revolt in LA begins. Watching from afar, Richard considers the Movement and their demands. He is not unsympathetic, but finds that their methods are heavy handed and self-destructive. He takes a small bit of pleasure when the Anarchs are attacked and dealt with
The exile of the Tower from Los Angeles; however, causes him a great deal of distress as financial assets in the area are lost.
2010 CE - With the expulsion and retreat of the Keui Jin/Cathayans, at Desmond Aldred’s behest, Richard Bowman heads to Los Angeles to help seize a foothold for House Everard…
August 5th, 2017 CE - Becomes Prince of Los Angeles. Immediately moves towards repairing and improving relations with the Anarchs and establishing a nexus of trade and information brokering in Los Angeles.
January 2018 CE - Faces down Hugo DuVal in a battle of the wills and appeals to the Kindred's sense of morality, humanity, and deceny -- invoking the memory and the Kindred's love for his fallen niece, the late Prince Cornelia Mowebary of Montreal to surrender to the Justicariate. Mercy is granted in the form of pardon and acceptance in the Camarilla so that he may return home and face his destiny with his held high, befitting a Ventrue.
February 2018 CE - Offers to peaceably abdicate his throne to Konstantin Rurik and is savagely murdered by Rurik, Harpies Miller and Hagen, and an Anarch hit squad hired by them following fomented lies and rumors of the turncoat Prince turned Anarch Siegrid of the True North. This causes a mass exodus of Camarilla and Ventrue from the City of Los Angeles in disgust at the slaughter of an unarmed and prostrating man and his family.
Commonly Known Information
Name: Rikard Bouwman
Notable Traits: Intensity, calm demeanor, incredible business acumen and political influence
Known By The Camarilla:
Rikard Bouwman is the second Childe of Luminary Ventrue, Desmond Aldred, and a scion of House Everard. He has exerted subtle influence through mortal history in his never ending quest to ferret out the Sabbat and other dangers to the Masquerade. Though he was a transient Kindred during his youthful and years as ancilla, he has settled into the mantle of Elder and becoming a shepherd of the Kindred condition. Until the past two centuries, he was not overly concerned with the operations or internal politics of the Tower or the Kindred Condition itself, instead choosing to cultivate wealth and challenge himself by intervening in mortal affairs and using his extensive web of networks to maintain the Masquerade and ensure the safety and sanctity of the Kindred species and the Tower itself.
He has served as the Ventrue Primogen for the City of London in the mid-19th Century, the Primogen of Los Angeles in the early part of the new millennia, and now holds the title of Prince of Los Angeles.
Known By The Ventrue:
Rikard demonstrates proclivities informed by his descent from Tinia and Julia Antasia. He is a naturally inquisitive and curious fellow, and more tolerant of new forms of governance and pursuit than many of his fellow Elders. He is still staunchly loyal to the Camarilla, but does believe the more moderate influences within the Anarch Movement may have legitimate criticisms that need to be addressed. He is far from an appeaser and placater, but will listen with an impartial ear and make decisions based on applicable evidence rather than nepotism and favoritism. This has won him allies in surprising corners, and more than a few enemies.
