___ History ___
Walter was born on February 14, 1896 in St. John’s, Newfoundland to a fairly affluent family, but he wanted to make his own mark on the world and wanted to serve his country. Shortly after his 18th birthday, in 1914, he enlisted in the British Army and became part of the newly formed Newfoundland Regiment during the Great War. After their initial training, the Regiment was sent in support of the Gallipoli Campaign and then later took part in the Battle of the Somme.
Walter was badly injured on July 1, 1916 during an infantry assault in the Beaumont-Hamel area. He was one of the few members of his regiment to survive. He survived his injuries, but was sent back to Newfoundland to recover, his military career over.
After being discharged from a local hospital, Walter became a recluse and shut-in at the family manor, spending his days and nights surrounded by books and music.
He became obsessed with his injuries and more morbid topics, such as injuries and deaths of his fellow veterans, keeping newspaper articles and photos of reports from the war front and the effects that the Great War had on soldiers after the conflict ended.
Little is known of Walter's activities again until his Embrace in 1936 not long after his 40th birthday. Little is known of his activities afterwards as well.
